Great Mosque, Tlemcen

#4 of 6 in Things to do in Tlemcen
Visit Great Mosque, a prime example of old Almoravid architecture, first built under the lead of sultan Yusuf ibn Tashfin and his son Ali ibn Yusuf in 1082 CE. As you enter, notice the horseshoe mixed with polylobed arches lining your path, a characteristic feature in the Almoravid style. The current structure represents reconstructions done some 50 years later: look for the inscription with the year 530 Hijri (1136 CE). The dome and minaret date from the 13th century.
