Over 10,000 species of native and exotic plants and animals inhabit a lush and immaculately kept landscape at Royal Botanic Gardens. Originally established in 1846 by Lieutenant Governor Charles La Trobe, the gardens today provide 38 hectares (94 acres) of colorful natural displays for you to wander among. The manmade Guilfoyle's Volcano serves as a reservoir and offers you a stunning view of the Melbourne skyline. The Ian Potter Foundation Children's Garden provides an engaging introduction to botany for kids, and the lake system hosts diverse aquatic species. If you have time for to see only one of Melbourne's many attractions, make sure to visit the Royal Botanical Gardens. Absolutely fantastic. Even on a stinking hot day, as it was when I visited, there's plenty of shade and cool gullies to keep the heat at bay. I particularly enjoyed the Australian native forest trail and the fern tree gully sections, both of which were brilliantly presented. The cafe/restaurant was also very well done. All in all, the Botanical Gardens was the highlight of my visit to Melbourne. Loved it.

A beautiful place to visit for a weekend stroll. Gardens are immaculately maintained and paths are well kept allowing for those who use walking aids or a wheel chair access to all the features. The tearooms by the lake are also worth a visit, but unfortunately are often popular with weddings and special events so often shut early which is disappointing. Overall a great place to visit to escape the concrete jungle.
