Explore Christopher Columbus Cemetery (Cemetario de Colon), a historical and architectural gem of Havana still in use today. Built in 1876 on the site of an earlier graveyard that was too small for the city's needs, this cemetery was designed by a Galician architect who sadly became the first person buried in his own creation. Roam the rows of ornate mausoleums, elaborate tombs, and family vaults, or admire the vibrant main chapel. Take a guided tour to better navigate the massive cemetery and find graves of notable Cubans, such as chess champion Jose Raul Capablanca and singer Ibrahim Ferrer. • Most tourists who visit the cemetery care great sailors tomb of Christopher Columbus. However, I recommend not only to study this burial. The fact is that many Cubans trying to decorate the graves of their relatives in the coolest possible. Therefore, in the cemetery you can find very beautiful tombstones and statues, and executed on a high technical level.

  • Interesting cemetery and the 2nd largest in the world. Worth a visit. Lots of interesting tombs and stories. The cheapest way to get there is to enjoy the Hop On Hop Off double decker tourist bus you can catch in front of the Hotel Ingleterra near the Capitolio. It is a great way to get out to see things that are far from your accommodations and much cheaper than a taxi.
  • This cemetery is well worth a few hours tour. Local guides are available to tell stories of various tombs including one dedicated to firemen. Walk on your own as well. Quiet, tranquil and meditative.
  • My grandmom my father and my uncle are burried here.
  • Very interesting place to visit. It has a big history. Be prepared to walk and listen different stories.
  • Well kept up active cemetery. The church and surrounding gardens are beautiful!
