Explore Christopher Columbus Cemetery (Cemetario de Colon), a historical and architectural gem of Havana still in use today. Built in 1876 on the site of an earlier graveyard that was too small for the city's needs, this cemetery was designed by a Galician architect who sadly became the first person buried in his own creation. Roam the rows of ornate mausoleums, elaborate tombs, and family vaults, or admire the vibrant main chapel. Take a guided tour to better navigate the massive cemetery and find graves of notable Cubans, such as chess champion Jose Raul Capablanca and singer Ibrahim Ferrer. For reasons of time we couldn't get but we coasted for a long stretch. The graveyard is huge and impresses the tombstones and White statues and well maintained. Deserves first due respect for the place is but a visit I believe would be appropriate.

This cemetery is well worth a few hours tour. Local guides are available to tell stories of various tombs including one dedicated to firemen. Walk on your own as well. Quiet, tranquil and meditative.

Top ten cemetery in the world. Be sure to study the story of 'La Milagrosa' before you arrive so that you can participate.. You will be touched. And bring sunglasses because on a hot sunny day the white marble is blinding.
