El Capitolio, Havana

4.2
#13 of 200 in Things to do in Havana
Admire the majestic El Capitolio, once home to Cuba's government. Now housing the Cuban Academy of Sciences, this building from 1929 was modeled after the Capitol Building in Washington, DC. Observe the grandiose structure, a project initiated by dictator Gerardo Machado, view the massive Doric columns that guard the entrance, and look up to see the impressive dome, inspired by the Paris Pantheon. The interior, even more intricate and rich in decorations, boasts the enormous Statue of the Republic, one of the world's largest indoor statues. • Renovation construction, seen from the outside only. Still rosy in its beauty. Shame photo opportunity here to come to Havana.

  • We like to visit El Capitolio, and we did it, even though it was under restoration. Cuban friends brought us to the foot of the National Capitol in Havana and we've got enormous pleasure. It impresses with its scale and its external appearance resembles the U.S. Capitol building in Washington, d.c., and St. Peter's Basilica in Rome.

  • The Cuban Capitol is beautiful. A shame to be in retirement. A curiosity is that it was inspired by and is very similar to the US Capitol.

  • Gorgeous building. All of the residents, tour guides aee quick to boast about how it's an exact replica of Washington's Capitol building. That said you are currently not allowed to go inside the building due to the fact that it's being restored, a process that has taken the better part of the past decade.
  • Beautiful building and excellent landmark to help you get back on track when you get lost...and you will! Restoration has been going on for years to it continues to be closed as do many historic buildings in Cuba, but it is still worth a look and you can enjoy watching real Cuban life go by in the parks around it.
  • Looked absolutely stunning. It was closed for renovations when I visited but it well worth it. The dome was a saving grace whenever I found it difficult to locate my position in the streets of Old Havana. By looking up and finding the dome I knew immediately where to head to direction wise. Yes do visit, no you don't have to enter to enjoy its architectural beauty.
  • Majestic building, renovated, looks like White House, it is even bigger. One of the "must see"
  • Beautiful building in the middle of Havanna. The big street infront of it allows you to take a good look at the old cars cruising around
