El Morro, Havana

4.2
#4 of 73 in Historic Sites in Cuba
Explore the 16th-century fortified castle at El Morro. Built to protect Havana's harbor from ongoing raids, the site now affords visitors wonderful views of the city, especially at sundown. If you’re interested in history, you'll enjoy your walk around the fortress. However, you'll be exposed to the elements during much of your stroll, so check the weather before you visit. Pop into the onsite maritime museum for accounts of epic sieges, then consider climbing up the lighthouse for a small extra charge. Highlights by is a truly beautiful place from your access which is made after crossing a tunnel which passes under the Bay and that can only traverse in given vehicle that are not allowed to do it on foot. For reasons of security. This beautiful space, which dates from the 16th century has walls up to 3 meters in width since this site was, for many years, the Center for the defense of the city. It is for this reason that, in the lower part, is called battery of the twelve apostles who are 12 cannons ready to attack. Weapons which, during colonial times, firing at 9 in the evening announcing the closing of the gates of the city. In addition, there was that after the revolution worked headquarters led by the legendary and large "Che" Guevara, which has in its his office furniture and some belongings of this character. But of course, without a doubt, cannon shot is the show that no traveler should miss. It is a show that recalls the El Morro cannon shot, reporting the closure of the city, every night at nine o'clock an exciting explosion occurs. Thus, men dressed in military outfits of the time carry out ceremony culminating with the DIN.

The light of the afternoon hitting against the powerful clouds of the Strait is the most beautiful thing that can be seen in Havana. It is worth moving to sunset and take awhile on the Esplanade that is next to the Fort. View impressive and free, also. You can then go through the tunnel of the Bay and dine in the old part of the city. There is also that people could try to not be cans and other trash.
