Plaza de Armas, Havana

4.5
Enjoy the historic and peaceful Plaza de Armas, and walk upon its unusual wooden-brick pavings, originally put in place to prevent the sounds of horses' hooves as they walked through the square. A great place to pick up souvenirs and knick knacks (there is a daily second-hand book market every day except Sundays), the square also serves as a picturesque setting to simply take in the sights. Take a seat and watch life go by in the square, lined with palm trees and showcasing amazing architecture. You can als pop into plenty of restaurants and bars in the surrounding area for refreshments. To visit Plaza de Armas on your trip to Havana, use our Havana trip builder .

  • From the square, oreilly on streets across La Giraldilla with Fuerza statue (which is the rum "Havana Club" label) leading into the Gulf of Mexico to the top of the Hill on the other side of the Canal, first Che mansion of pale beige color and the right white " Statue of the Christ of Havana "appeared.

  • You won't miss this jewel of a colonial plaza. Complete with a stretch of road paved with wood. There is a lot of history here and it's interesting to listen in on guides explaining the history to the...  more »

  • A nice area to go and visit and see how life in Havana is at a more relaxing atmosphere. Just be careful there are a few people trying to make money doing magic tricks and caricatures. Just do not make eye contact and if they hand you something, do not take it or you will insult them and you will pay the price..
  • Plaza de Armas was our favourite plaza to people watch while we sat in the shade, resting our tired feet. The centre of the square is lush with palm trees and other tropical plants, while the perimeter is lined with elegant Baroque buildings. Plaza de Armas was built in the 1600s and was used for military exercises up until the mid-1700s. After undergoing a transformation, it became popular among rich Havana citizens and attracted people who wanted to enjoy carriage rides around the area. Plaza de Armas is invigorated by the second-hand book market that operates there every Tuesday to Sunday. Here you can browse Cuban classic books, now out of print, magazines dating back to 1940’s and 50’s, and newspapers from during the revolution.
  • Located in old Havana this antique market offers a nice stop along your journey. With most of the stalls selling antique books and posters it does offer a nice change from the typical souvenir shops hawking magnets, Che hats and street art. By no means the high point of my trip I would say it is worth a quick visit. Like most things in Cuba the price is flexible so do negotiate. I believe the market is closed Mondays.
  • Nice park, lot of street sellers, selling old items like in flee market.
  • Amazin square with park inside and many street artists
