Plaza de la Catedral, Havana

4.6
Cuban history comes alive at Plaza de la Catedral, home to one of Havana's oldest and most significant Catholic churches. Laid out on an erstwhile swamp, this epicenter of Havana's World Heritage-listed old town represents a kind of open-air museum of Caribbean Baroque architecture. Like the cathedral, the square dates back to the 1700s, when the area became a naval dockyard. Later, the neighborhood housed some of Havana's finest private mansions. Today, a number of popular restaurants and the city's museum of colonial art lie clustered around the plaza. • Has several points of trade and have been kept since the Spaniards built them. There are cafés, the beautiful church, the Cuban Palm reading among other souvenirs.

  • Beautiful church and square. Lively crowd in the central most commercial area of Havana. Concerts, shopping, restaurants, bars. Close to other museums and attractions.  more »
  • Cuban friends brought us on Cathedral square in Havana, so we visited the famous Cathedral of St. Christopher Catholic Cathedral. And what is the atmosphere here, the realm of serenity and relaxation. Cuban women in national dresses colonial era walking under the arcades. Everywhere-the fortune tellers. In the numerous restaurants and bars, you can listen to live music. But the main attraction of the area is the beautiful façade of the Cathedral of St. Christopher, a symbol of old Havana. In 1592 year on Cuba was built first in the new world. Which supplied water to local residents, as well as ships in the port. The Cathedral itself and neighbouring colonial buildings were built in the 18th century.

  • A beautiful walk around the Plaza de la Catedral. At times can be very busy but amazing you see locals going to and from work or school.
  • Beautiful plaza. The main cathedral is gorgeous as well although it's not open to tourists, at least not during my visit. A couple of museums nearby and restaurants as well. A bit pricey just to keep in mind since you'll be paying in CUC as a tourist.
  • Beatiful square, beware of all the people trying to lure you into an expensive reastairant with doubtful quality, though.
  • Amazing place with this old cathedral. Inside there is a statue of John Paul 2.
  • Great views, smaller portions but was part of a tourist bus
