Castillo de San Pedro de la Roca, Santiago de Cuba

Guarding the entrance to Santiago de Cuba Bay, Castillo de San Pedro de la Roca stands as one of the best preserved and most complete examples of Spanish-American military architecture. Built to help protect against pirate attacks, the multi-level stone fortress--now a UNESCO World Heritage Site--has a fortified gun platform, powder magazine, command building and guard post. Walk the symmetrical, ancient walls and enjoy the view from atop the fortress. Be sure to buy a permit if you wish to take photos.
