Great way to spend half a day in Fiji, learning about the Fijian culture and food at the local markets followed by a hands on cooking lesson where we created amazing dishes that we enjoyed... more »
This is such a great day! I loved learning about the produce, history, culture and farming in Fiji.. so interesting. Food was delicious and everything is explained clearly! Thank you for the wonderful class!
What can I say about Flavors of Fiji? I will start off saying that I love food and cooking. I love to try different foods and love to learn about new ingredients. I read all of the 5* reviews of Flavors of Fiji and made sure to go there while I was in Fiji, but I wish I didn’t. Would I recommend it? You will enjoy it more if you don’t really know how to cook; if you do know how to cook, you might be better off just grabbing a Fiji cookbook and walking through one of the local markets to see what the local fresh produce is. If you are in Fiji during in the rainy season and need an indoor activity, it would be ok, but I do think there are better things you can do with your money than go here. I won’t be going back. Pros • It is a very clean place • They quickly teach you how to make 6 different food dishes (this can be a con too, as they don’t spend a lot of time on any of the meals) • The course runs very smoothly and efficiently • The foods that you make are very flavourful • You get to eat what you make Cons • It’s definitely out of the way in an industrial area; if your hotel is not in Denarau, it will be a long taxi ride, very long walk, or a mix of buses and walking that will take a while to get to • The price is pretty high for what you are getting • The instructor that was more marketing based was very pushy with trying to sell you extra things; I definitely felt like it was all about the money • Most of the ingredients are all cut up for you and placed into the exact sized portions that you will need, so there isn’t much for you to do besides put it in the pot and cook it (some people may think of this as a pro and not a con); they do let you cut up a few token things • I felt like they rushed through things • I felt like the marketing based instructor was very fake nice (overly nice to your face but…) • The cooks were very knowledgeable about the ingredients they were using, but I did not feel that they were professional chefs that knew a lot about other ingredients; I felt like they are just two women from the local area that are showing you how to cook foods that they know how to make (some people may think of this as a pro and not a con); because of that, if you ask about something that is not in one of the 6 dishes you are making, they might not know. They seem to either blow off the questions that they don’t know the answers to or give you a snarky remark, which was very disheartening
