Mount Otemanu, Bora Bora

#2 of 12 in Nature in Society Islands
Mountain · Volcano
Head up to the base of Mount Otemanu, an impressive natural monument whose volcanic rock peak marks the highest point on Bora Bora. While the brittle, jagged, 727 m (2,385 ft) summit is too inhospitable to be accessed, you can hike or take a 4x4 trip up to the base of the mountain. The latter option remains the most popular, because of the jungle's density and the difficulty of the walk. Look up at the black, rugged top of the mountain (visible across the island) as it stands in sharp contrast to the lush greens and bright blues of most of the landscape. • I wasn't able to get a summit in but by looking at the mountain there isn't a way you could make it to the top with OUT a guide. Extremely technical!  more »
  • Seeing is believing, and the sight of Mount Otemanu in Tahiti is even better than the brochure photos.  more »
  • Otemanu is a small South Pacific island northwest of Tahiti in French Polynesia. Surrounded by sand-fringed motus (islets) and a turquoise lagoon protected by a coral reef, it’s known for its scuba diving. It's also a popular luxury resort destination where some guest bungalows are perched over the water on stilts. At the island's center rises Mt. Otemanu, a 727m dormant volcano.
  • Views are incredible fro all angles.....a new view every cloud that glides through the top
