Upper Rock Nature Reserve, Gibraltar

4.2
#5 of 18 in Wildlife in Gibraltar
Home to Europe's only population of free-roaming primates as well as nearly 600 species of plants, Upper Rock Nature Reserve also serves as a staging post for thousands of migratory birds. Ride a cable car to the reserve or hike up a narrow road (which you'll share with light traffic). For a bigger challenge, climb the steps running up the east side of the Rock. Hiking or climbing will yield more diverse vistas and encounters with the monkeys in their natural habitat, instead of interacting with them in a large group of tourists. • We visited the place with mixing emotions. The nature and view were then incredibly beautiful, but all the cars that barely could be on the road, which either stayed idle or drove very slowly to avoid driving monkeys and tourists down. There was so much car us and it was so crowded on top. We hadn't bought tickets for the caves but only for the lookout points. We spent about an hour and a half queuing for the cable Car, which was definitely nothing special, and then 15 min on top, so if I had to go up there I would walk up there (if the weather is not too hot) or take a bus or taxi and so walked around up there. We thought it was actually a waste of time.

  • From the top of the mountain, we could see not only Gibraltar, but also The African continent (Morocco) as well as La Linea and Al-Hesilas in Spain. The top of the mountain is 412 meters above sea level, and you can go on foot, but you can usually take a ropeway to the top of the mountain. There is a café at the top of the mountain.
