Interesting archaeological history of Thessaloniki, covering who/what was there before and how the city came about, following through from the Macedonian kings to the Roman era and then the Byzantine ... more »
From the stunningly beautiful items like the delicate myrtle crowns made from gold leaf, to the more plain but extremely interesting objects like sling stones used during battle and engraved to identify the allegiances of the throwers, this was a place of fascinating things. I also loved the current temporary exhibition about the concept of copying, which explored everything from ancient Greeks copying other ancient Greeks to modern art and souvenirs copying antiquity. I liked that the museum didn't just rest on the laurels of its beautiful collections but tried to get people philosophically link the past with the present and get people thinking.
Nice museum. You are allowed to take photos. But i think you will really need a guide to explain everything as there is no interactive guide or something. It is also not a big museum. It seems like not so many tourist came here, in my opinion, it is not bad to visit.
