Pantheon, Rome

#2 of 51,982 in Things to do in Italy
Nearly 2,000 years old, Pantheon is the only building from the Greco-Roman world that has remained substantially intact and in continuous use throughout its long history. A marvel of ancient architecture, it still boasts the world's largest unreinforced concrete dome. Originally designed to be a temple to all the gods of the ancient Rome, the site has been used as a Roman Catholic church, dedicated to St. Mary, since the seventh century. The building features large, granite Corinthian columns. Don't skip this site if it's raining; seeing and hearing the rain pouring into this ancient building through the hole in the ceiling is a special experience. • Iconic. Amazing place. Possibly the best place I visited in Rome. Free to enter as it's still a working Church. From the outside is big, "round" and imposing concrete. Inside it's detailed, colourful and instills a need for quiet. Originally a Roman Temple it was dedicated to numerous god's (hence the name) and holds the body of Raphael. There are audio and video points (couple of euros) which give a good overview of the place.
  • This was one of the top places we went to when in Rome. It is incredible, you walk down a little side road then suddenly this huge monster appears. Grey and dull looking, then you pass through some giant doors into a stunning room. It's worth making the effort to go and see this stunning location.
