A World Heritage-listed Shinto temple, Itsukushima Shrine remains best known for its red torii gate, "floating" on the surface of the Inland Sea. The shrine dates back to the 12th century and has undergone several reconstructions over the ages, most recently in the 16th century. Admire the scenic shrine building, which is at its most picturesque at high tide, when both the gate and the structure on stilts appear to be floating on the sea. Take a relaxing walk and explore the surroundings, or enjoy the view from a boat cruise. Beautiful island with little temples and shrines scattered around. You can eat all sorts of sea food, octopus, oysters, sea cucumbers, you name it. There are cute wild deer walking around, trying to get some food. Beautiful sunset if the weather allows. Would have put 5 stars but the main attraction, the red Tori gate in the water, is under maintenance and covered in scaffolds.
Loved the deer, though I'm sure most of the reviews mention them. Lovely little stalls along the main boardwalk as well. Unfortunately the shrine was under renovation at the time, but it didn't detract from the experience overall. Enjoyed my evening on the island nonetheless
