Shoshazan Engyoji, Himeji

#3 of 244 in Things to do in Himeji
Landmark · Tourist Spot
Journey to the massive, picturesque temple complex of Shoshazan Engyoji, with ancient structures peppered throughout a densely forested mountain top. Established over 1,000 years ago, the complex remains lovingly preserved, and still serves worshippers and monks in training to this day. Across its sprawling site you'll observe huge temple halls with immaculately designed wooden architecture, filled with Buddhist artifacts and treasures. The site served as a shooting location in the Hollywood movie, "The Last Samurai," and it's easy to see why. Wear sturdy shoes to negotiate the uneven ground, and bring enough water for your trip.
