Admire an array of wildlife during a visit to Izu Shaboten Zoo, a nature park set at the foot of a mountain. Particularly notable for its resident population of capybaras, the park also offers the chance to see a range of other species, including monkeys, squirrels, and peacocks. The park's name translates as "Cactus Park," with plenty of fleshy plants, artfully arranged, to be found in the five pyramid-shaped greenhouses here. Take a boat tour across the onsite lake to reach a number of small islands populated by small monkeys. • Worth visiting, with a good selection of unusual animals, all well cared for. Choose a quiet time and get to pet the white rhino.

  • I really enjoyed this place. It was more fun than I expected and had so many interesting places to explore. Kids and adults alike will enjoy it.

  • A very bizarre experience, we travelled from Fukushima just to see the capybaras, and it was great. Went on a cold misty day, the Mexican music playing everywhere was kind of ominous, and animals seemed to appear out of the mist. Capybaras were a friendly bunch, and I really liked that there weren’t too many large animals (which often feel very sad at zoos). The chimpanzees didn’t look too happy in their sparse concrete enclosure, which was a shame. Food options are limited outside of set meal times (no lunch to be found at 2pm) but I’d say it’s worth a visit!
  • small but special. you can play and touch with a few of cute animals in the zoo.
