Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine serves as the starting point for the hiking trails, covered by densely packed vivid orange gates, that snake up the mountain behind it. This Shinto shrine devoted to Inari, the god of rice, has existed on site since 816 CE and contains several buildings and gates. Visitors hike the paths, which are covered by thousands of parallel donated "torii" gates, to reach the inner shrine halfway up the mountain. Wear comfortable shoes, and stop at the restaurants along the way to sample "abuurage" (fried tofu), considered a favorite food of foxes, the special messengers of Inari. • By far the most impressive shrine in a city of temples and shrines. Give yourself lots of time to enjoy the walk and the whole experience. Lots of interesting little detours on the way.  more »
  • Because the weather is cold and slow, I've been stranded for a while, and it's getting dark in here, unless through the lens of a single eye, it's impossible to see such a beautiful orange red with the naked eye or the phone. THOUSAND bird habitat "sure enough to see the day to fit, especially when it is good weather."

  • On Sunday a pilgrimage and because maybe, but anyway it's crowded. 2-I too was not very crowded three years ago. Like more than Japanese tourists prefer.... Torii lined background pictures while being tossed about on average in big trouble will be. Physical fitness is required as it climbs the mountain.

  • This place probably is one of the most popular site thanks to its iconic yellow wooden arches. So early to avoid the bus loads of tourist. Since it’s a Shrine, pretty much open 24-hours. I got there at 7:30 and there are already a number of visitors but still manage to find peace and tranquility. You can spend 1 hour if you just visit the lower part of the Shrine or you can spend 3-4 hours and hike up to the top of the hill which is well worth the effort.
  • This is also really a nice and impressive location. Please be warned this place is very very crowded. The area has many temples and shrines and the trail is long. It takes up to 2 hours going to the top of the mountain trial. For pictures going uphill is better. After 30 minutes you notice the area becomes more quiet. And they have a resting place with a shop that sells some snacks and drinks. That is absolutely needed if you continue to go uphill. However, the place is great and if you only walk around there are so many food cart at the main entrance you can try all kind of unique Japanese snacks. Also great for a food trip.
  • Iconic location for a reason; beautiful torii surrounded by a serene forest. As suggested by others, try to arrive early as it gets very crowded. If you're a feeling up to it, climb to the top as the scenery improves while the crowds lessen. Strongly recommend wandering off the main path (where allowed) and spending time amongst the smaller shrines where it's much quieter. Make sure that your phone is fully charged as you'll take a tonne of photos!
  • Leave early in the morning if you want to avoid the tour groups!!! BEST ADVICE for this place. We left at 6AM to reach here for the opening and was maybe the best idea we had during this visit. As soon as we arrived, we had peace and quiet and the visit was relaxing and calm. We managed to get many good photos capturing the beauty of all the pillars. Its amazing how the light from the sun makes every corner of this place light up! It went all downhill around 10AM (as we were leaving). Hordes of people, tour groups mainly arrived and the quietness went straight out the window! Luckily, we were leaving at this point, and even getting out of this place was stressful, as we had to navigate between crowds to reach freedom. I cannot emphasise to how horrible it was, the tourists were loud, littering, and making the narrow archways blocked. A 5-minute journey to the exit will take you 20 minutes. Be prepared! This place is definitely a place you should visit if you are around the area, it is one of my highlights from Japan…. Just remember……VISIT EARLY and AVOID tourists! It is the best advice anyone can give about this place! Oh, and bring insect repellent, ended up with bite marks all over!
  • If you like hikes, well this is your place! It was truly an experience of its own. All the Tori's lining up the way was beautiful. The place can get very crowded, and many of the stairs are a bit tilted so wear a good pair of shoes. On the way up, there are many shrines surrounding the path where one is able to stop to take photos. At the almost top point of the hill there was a beautiful view of all of Kyoto with a gift shop and a place to stop for ice-cream. It is a bit over priced but was very good. The last bit was disappointing with just a regular shrine like all else. But none the less it was an amazing experience overall.
