Find a place of restfulness and cultural intrigue during a trip to Okochi Sanso Garden, the mountainside estate of period film actor Okochi Denjiro (1898-1962). The sprawling and well-maintained gardens show off each of the four seasons, and a number of water features and ornamental flourishes complement their botanical richness. Across the site lie a number of structures built during the 1930s and 40s, including the main Japanese-style home, teahouses, and shrines. • This was my wife’s favorite stop on the western attractions in Kyoto. She really enjoyed the tea house and drinking some authentic matcha. The views are great as well!  more »

  • My favorite garden that I visited in Japan. It was so peaceful and quiet but I might have lucked out since no one was around, which was a welcome change from the crowds everywhere else. The walk around the gardens was very meditative and what I was hoping to find. Wear a good pair of shoes, especially if it's raining. It is 1000 yen but it was worth it to me plus you get free green tea and a snack included.
  • Very beautiful area. However, it is very crowded and much shorter than you probably expect. Go on off hours to avoid the hiatfs of self sticks. I get it's amazing when it's lit up at night. Go to the small, private garden at the end of this short walk. It's 1000 yen to get in, but it's with it.
