Shosei-en Garden, Kyoto

#14 of 88 in Parks in Kyoto
Garden · Hidden Gem · Nature / Park
Quiet and peaceful despite its city-center location, Shosei-en Garden provides a photogenic oasis of tranquility featuring an attractive lake, trees, and flowers. Dating back to the 9th century, but with its present layout designed in 1641, the garden's meandering paths take you to a number former tea houses set in different areas. The well-kept garden features a pond brimming with carp and green turtles, while blue herons nest in tree branches overhead. Not far from the Buddhist Higashi Honganji Temple to which it belongs, the garden sits only 10 minutes by foot from Kyoto's central train station. • Shosei-en is an island of tranquillity in the busy heart of Kyoto. Not just from the traffic but also the crowds. Not many people visit. It has some nice features but its landscaping is more low key.....  more »
  • We were early for our tea ceremony and decided to take a stroll in the adjacent streets and came across Shosei-en Gardens what an of peace and quiet the entry fee is 500¥ but it's worth it...  more »
  • Very nice park in the city. You totally forget that you in the middle of Osaka. There are multiple teahouses in different styles. This park is probably best in spring when the different trees bloom. The entrance fee (¥ 500) is used to maintain the garden and you are provided with a guide explaining the history of the different buildings.
  • Quite small garden, yet has some nice spots. In some areas felt, like it would need a little bit more care, but on the other hand, you can feel as if you would be somethere in the nature. If you are money sensitive, than there are more interesting places to spend your 500¥
