#2 of 3,864 in Things to do in Tokyo
Pay your respects to the deified Emperor Meiji and his wife, Empress Shoken, at Meiji Jingu Shrine, a Shinto shrine surrounded by a forested area crisscrossed with peaceful walking paths. At the temple itself, visitors give offerings, buy amulets and charms, and reflect on and write out their wishes. Walk through the treasure house to see belongings of the emperor and empress, and visit the museum annex next door, which hosts temporary exhibitions. Note that photography is not permitted within the temple’s halls. For travelers who use our world travel planner, Tokyo holidays become easier to arrange, with trips to the Meiji Jingu Shrine and other attractions mapped out and timetabled.

  • Memorial dedicated to Emperor and Empress in 1920s. In a large park it’s a lovely walk to the shrine. Check out the wall of Sake used to commemorate the royals on an annual basis.  more »
  • Great shrine in/near Harajuku. Spent a few hours here with my travel companion. There is a lovely garden that has a 500 Yen entrance fee- totally worth it. Within the garden, the Emperor's fishing spo...  more »
  • The Meiji shrine is placed in such a calm surrounding it is hard to believe you are in the world‘s biggest city once you find yourself inside the forest. The shrine itself is rather small. It doesn‘t ...  more »

  • My favourite ever place in Tokyo. A quiet, serene area where I could really think about things in my life, in the heart of busy Tokyo. Absolutely beautiful shrine. Beautiful architecture and layout. Huge tori gates perfect for photos. A great selection of omamori (luck charms) to bring home to your family and yourself. Good walk to reflect and enjoy your life in nature as there are many forest trees surround with fresh air.
  • You can get lost here and end up walking in circles be careful. I got to see a wedding procession and the Trees. Biggest beautiful pairs of trees in the main shrine that give blessings to marriage. Great experience!
  • My favourite shrine in Tokyo. We arrived there around 9AM before it got crowded. Because of that, we were able to enjoy a peaceful walk around the shrine/ gardens. Make sure you wear comfy walking shoes as it’s quite big if you plan to see everything there.
  • A fair amount of things to do - visitors can try various traditional activities such as buying a fortune card with a poem on it by Emperor Meiji, pray, write down thoughts or prayers on ema plates or simply view the shrine. The shrine itself was traditional and nice to see, and the huge gates outside it were amazing. The forest surrounding it is pleasant and it's a good place to visit if in Japan, as it is one of the most popular shrines.
  • Very impressive and peaceful, you forget you're in the centre of Tokyo. Huge gates to the shrine and a nice walk through the trees to get to the main entrance. The gardens are worth the small fee too.
