Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden, Shinjuku

4.6
#1 of 5,506 in Parks in Japan
Originally constructed for the private residence of "daimyo" (feudal lord) Naito in the Edo period, Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden has served as a public park under the Ministry of the Environment since its reconstruction after World War II. Tour the park to see its three main sections: a traditional Japanese garden dotted with ponds intercepted by islands and bridges; a symmetrically planned French garden; and an English garden with sweeping lawns and cherry blossom trees. Stop by the greenhouse to inspect the permanent and special exhibits of tropical flowers. • Great Japanese garden, amid the skyscrapers a piece of ancient Japan and drawn life from the art of man. A visit not to be missed

  • Good to walk and enjoy the green garden. However, it may be not the best time now as not much good view currently than other seasons. May consider to have a tea/lunch at the restaurant inside the gard...  more »
  • Beautiful nature you can enjoy cherry blossoms, roses, foliage and seasonal. I'm glad there is plenty in a 10-minute walk from downtown national stadium and Shinjuku!

  • One of the most beautiful parks in central Tokyo. A wonderful place where families can relax due to the wide open spaces. The park is immaculately maintained. This is a popular spot during cherry blossom or when the leaves change color during autumn. This place is a lovely little refuge for those seeking a little nature in a bustling metropolitan city.
  • An extremely beautiful place! We went there in December, it looked gorgeous - green, gold and red, and the atmosphere was peaceful and relaxing. If the weather is sunny, you can take food and a blanket and have a picnic. Also the Japanese-style garden is fantastic. There are some some nice food options around, so you can pop into one of the cafés right outside.
  • A great "hidden secret" of Tokyo. This garden is amazingly large and well worth the visit. 200 yen per adult is well worth it for the greenhouse alone! Bring a picnic and relax. Take a nice walk. Enjoy nature. Just fantastic to come and visit.
  • A very beautiful and big park that is well managed and not expensive. A lot of different areas and styles of gardens. Good for a morning stroll before heading towards the city. The greenhouse is particularly lush and there are many artists sitting around capturing the beauty of this park. All-in-all a very happy vibe.
  • SO beautiful - do not visit Tokyo without planning a trip here. It was so wonderful strolling among the trees and seeing the vibrant colors! Be sure to explore the whole park - especially down by the pond with the cool bridges on the west side.
