Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden, Shinjuku

4.6
#1 of 5,548 in Parks in Japan
Originally constructed for the private residence of "daimyo" (feudal lord) Naito in the Edo period, Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden has served as a public park under the Ministry of the Environment since its reconstruction after World War II. Tour the park to see its three main sections: a traditional Japanese garden dotted with ponds intercepted by islands and bridges; a symmetrically planned French garden; and an English garden with sweeping lawns and cherry blossom trees. Stop by the greenhouse to inspect the permanent and special exhibits of tropical flowers. • Beautiful park and all parks of Japan. Japanese gardening is an art and helps in Zen. Moments of respite away from the noise of the busy city.

  • I loved the garden and is super central in the city. You have to walk quite but it is worth

  • Trying to get a bridge tap yen. By the way, is closed. It was a Monday. I don't think that you can see the ghosting, but walked from the entrance of the ggongggong shut the door. However, it could be seen. How to? I saw the views from the observation deck will be tapped. Unfortunately, walking the garden, but .... Even the happiest Outlook saw how to? The area was covered with lush forests by an enemy.

  • Just beautiful, and so peaceful despite being in the heart of Tokyo. The park is huge and filled with lawns that can be sat on, and water features that make for a relaxing visit. The Japanese garden section is particularly appealing. Of note is the mother and child garden, in the Japanese section, where children can explore on narrow paths and get a bit of nature. Bring in a bento and enjoy a bit of peace!
  • The moment you step into this garden you will totally forget you are in Shinjuku. It's so serene in here and it is very big. I spent almost 2 hours inside. You can also lay down your mat and sit down on the grass and enjoy your picnic. Definitely a place I'll be going back if i am in the area
  • Very pretty and relaxing gardens, we went as soon as they opened in the morning paying the entry fee (around 200 yen for adults). You could smell the gardens after briefly walking past the gates which is refreshing as the rest of Shinjuku is very concrete. Highly recommend.
  • A very beautiful garden in Tokyo. Well maintained and designed. I think they the fee for entry is waived on Sundays if you're looking for something in the general Meiji/Shinjuku areas that will be slightly less crowded for an afternoon.
  • We visited Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden twice in May of 2016. It's a fantastic walking experience and a wonderful place to picnic. Well treed, with formal flower gardens, beautiful ponds, and plenty of walking paths; this park is a must see when you visit Tokyo!

Where to stay in Tokyo

Tokyo abounds with excellent places to stay, from luxury affairs to humble budget-friendly lodgings. Its glittering skyscrapers house numerous international four- and five-star hotels, both in the populous cultural hotspots of Shinjuku and in the business centers of Akasaka and Shinbashi. Meanwhile, hostels catering to the shoestring traveler lie scattered throughout the city. For a memorable, distinctly Japanese experience, seek out a ryokan, a traditional bed and breakfast with tatami floor mats and sliding screen doors.
