Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden, Shinjuku

4.6
#1 of 7,318 in Parks in Japan
Originally constructed for the private residence of "daimyo" (feudal lord) Naito in the Edo period, Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden has served as a public park under the Ministry of the Environment since its reconstruction after World War II. Tour the park to see its three main sections: a traditional Japanese garden dotted with ponds intercepted by islands and bridges; a symmetrically planned French garden; and an English garden with sweeping lawns and cherry blossom trees. Stop by the greenhouse to inspect the permanent and special exhibits of tropical flowers. • In the tumult of Shinjuku, look for the garden and the little blocks of meandering alleys where the shops and the people walk slower. The garden is beautiful and you should definitely spend time. Acce...  more »

  • The Park is huge and loads to the walk a. If not the skyscrapers could be seen, one would forget smooth, being in the city. However, mid March a little too early is to inspect the Park in all its glory.

  • This is arguably Tokyo's most beautiful park. A modest 200 yen entrance fee and no alcohol policy is effective in ensuring a tranquil and serene environment not found elsewhere. The park itself is expansive with lots of lawn, ponds, ancient trees and more. Note, in keeping with ensuring a relaxing space, ball games etc. are not allowed. It's a great place for a picnic or a stroll. There is also a splendid rose garden and botanical green house, as well as various restaurants and cafes. Highly recommended.
  • This place was simply amazing! If you're into plants definitely check out the greenhouse it won't disappoint! There's lots of other interesting things to see here if you visit in spring. Plenty of cherry blossoms and beautiful landscapes. It is an alcohol free zone and there is a bag check on entering. There's also a small admission fee. My single adult ticket was 250 yen. You can easily spend the entire day enjoying just this park though so it's well worth it!
  • This garden is absolutely breath taking. It is split up into sections and each section is a different style of traditional garden. Everything here is very well maintained and the trees are masterfully sculpted. A great place to spend an afternoon exploring or just resting/reading in the shade of a beautiful tree. A very peaceful place to relax.
  • We were so lucky to visit when the cherry blossom was still out as we'd missed it in most other gardens. Stunningly huge garden. The organic restaurant in the garden serves beautiful food which looks like a work of art. The greenhouse is well worth a visit too. We expected a small greenhouse, but it's like a mini Eden project.
  • An expansive garden in the middle of busy Tokyo, you can get to rest and relax and enjoy your time surrounded by trees and all sorts of plants! It's a great place to visit during spring for its numerous cherry blossoms trees! There's 3 kinds of gardens, a forest, and a greenhouse that houses all sorts of plants! You can easily spend half a day exploring everything Shinjuku Gyoen has to offer. I want to come back here in the autumn next time! So much worth the 200 JPY entrance!
