Playa Chen Rio, Cozumel

4.4
#6 of 14 in Beaches in Cozumel
Visit the sandy shores of Playa Chen Rio and splash about in crystal clear water protected from the sea's currents by giant rocks. The beach has a reputation as a great snorkeling location thanks to its high level of underwater visibility, making it popular with both tourists and locals. Take ingredients for an al fresco meal with you, or head to the local snack bar, which offers food and drinks. Bring plenty of sunscreen as natural shade at the beach is minimal. • Beginning to get a little too busy with cruise ship people but it is a great beach. Tidal pools where young kids can safely play. Is a really beautiful place where you can hang with lots of locals on ...  more »
  • Public beach! Yes, not required to pay a beach club access is a plus! Plus the beach is beautiful. There is a restaurant on site where you can you restore and get a Chair, if you want. The beach is so big that you can be quiet, especially on the right side of the restaurant. On the left side, there are rocks that make natural wading pools, or children can bathe, it is filled with local and on the right the waves are bigger, so more peace. We love the waves and it was just perfect on the right side. From downtown to the beach it's about 260 MX pesos, it is best to arrange the return with the same taxi, because they are rare and beach is about a 20-minute drive away from the city. Otherwise rent a car!

Where to stay in Cozumel

Most accommodations in Cozumel line the island's western shoreline, offering excellent beach access and the airport. Avenida Rafael E. Melgar provides the widest range of hotels and private rentals, with some of the more spacious and relaxed options sitting around 10 km (6.2 mi) south of the town center. Budget-conscious travelers should look to the main township, where a selection of smaller guesthouses and pensions can be found just a few streets back from the beach.
