Create an itinerary including Zona Arqueologica de Palenque
Observe and inspect impressive ruins and intricate Mayan carvings, surrounded by dense jungle, at Zona Arqueologica de Palenque. At just 2.5 sq km (1 sq mi), the site is fairly small compared to some of the more revered indigenous ruins. That said, archaeologists estimate only about 10% of the city has been excavated, leaving potentially thousands of structures still covered by jungle. Allow yourself plenty of time to admire the site and its rich documented history. Consider hiring a guide to teach you about the site’s interesting history. • Great ruins to explore. Recommend getting in there early before the rush. Was a great morning exploring. Costs 75peso per person and you also need to pay a national parks fee of around 40pesos. Easy to catch a collectivo there and back. We caught on just last the round about on the road that heads to the ruins. Was 20peso per person.
  • GOOD: -- The ruins and surrounding jungle are beautiful. -- You are allowed to climb up most of the 7-8 large temples very freely. -- You can peek inside one of the temples. -- Signs are in both English and Spanish. BAD:. -- Street sellers/tour guides will hound you at the temple entrance. Wearing headphones was helpful. -- Street sellers are allowed to sell within the temple grounds, which ruins an otherwise awe-inspiring atmosphere. TO KNOW: -- It starts getting crowded with tourists at 09.00 so arrive at 0800 for uninterrupted views. -- There's a 35 peso fee to get into the park, and then a further 75 peso fee to get into the temples. -- Minibuses to/from Palenque centre should be maximum 20 pesos per person. (Even as an English tourist I got them down from 90pp to 20pp)
