Playa Zicatela, Puerto Escondido

#1 of 54 in Things to do in Puerto Escondido
Beach · Nature / Park
Head to the surfer's paradise of Playa Zicatela, a long sandy beach offering the famous waves of the Mexican Pipeline. Stick to the northern end of the beach for the best surfing spots, and the majority of the beach's hip cafes, restaurants, and accommodations. Beginners and those looking for a little more quiet will want to head to the south of the 3 km (1.9 mi) beach, where the surf still presents a challenge, but is more suitable for newcomers to the sport. Don't head out into the waters without a board, as the undertow isn't safe for swimmers. PutPlaya Zicatela into our Puerto Escondido trip itinerary maker site and find out what's close by, where to stay, and where to head next.

  • We only visited to see the sunset which was amazing. It really isn't a smimmable beach, or at least it wasn't when we visited. But definitely go for the sunset. If you want buy some food and eat...  more »
  • Long wide beach where you can be away from crowded people and just relax and enjoy watching surfing. Wave is rough so it’s not a place you can enjoy swimming but had a great time here.  more »
  • Exceptional place for surfers, almost surfer paradise. For regular swimmers waves are very strong and can be dangerous. Climate is demasiado hot
  • Wow. Clean! They are very serious about keeping beaches nice here. Some good surf spots and others with some brutal waves.
