Explore a tropical landscape and extensive marshlands at San Jose's Estuary and Bird Sanctuary, home to one of the region's largest bodies of fresh water. Long a source of drinking water for Spanish missionaries and the local population, the estuary became a protected area thanks to its riotous array of waterfowl and other birds. Pay a visit to the area and you can wander along the network of well-marked hiking paths that traverse the coast. Keep your eyes open for some of the 250 bird species that live and winter in the sanctuary, as well as plant species like fan palms and cattails. Keep in mind that there are few amenities, so bring food and water for longer treks.
