Stand under the shade of Tule Tree, a Montezuma cypress situated in church grounds. With a diameter of 9.38 m (30.8 ft), the cypress is considered by many to be the stoutest tree in the world. Local Zapotec legend has it that the tree was planted around 1,400 years ago by a priest of Ehecatl, the Aztec wind god. Most scientific estimates support the Zapotec's belief, and its position on a sacred site, now a Roman Catholic Church, suggests there could be some truth in the legend surrounding its origin. • Don’t waste your time the plaza and everything around it is closed off so you cannot get close. You can take a picture but it is not close you will only see the top of tree

  • Kind of a must see, tourist cliche. Big old tree with a little town attached. Students with top grades may be your guides. They have a memorized tour speech delivered in machine gun speed English. Cute kids but struggle if they go off script. Only an arborist would spend more than 30 minutes here.
  • This is the thickest tree I've seen my whole life. You can no longer touch it since now its gated. Still is truly spectacular. Also nearby there is a ice cream place inside a Mercado which has authentic Oaxaca ice cream. Dare to try something different, you wont be disappointed.
