Moulay Idriss Zerhoun, Meknes

#10 of 16 in Things to do in Meknes
Landmark · Hidden Gem · Tourist Spot
Explore the compact narrow streets and souks of Moulay Idriss Zerhoun, a picturesque hilltop town at the foot of Mount Zerhoun. An important pilgrimage center for Muslims, this early, distinctly Islamic town was founded in the 8th century by Moulay Idris I, who established the Zaydi-Shi'a dynasty. The town houses a mausoleum of the ruler, open to Muslims only and considered highly sacred. Non-Muslim visitors can admire the only round minaret in Morocco, painted green with calligraphy ornaments, and enjoy views of the ancient city of Volubilis and the valley from the town's many viewpoints and terraces.
