Hassan Tower, Rabat

#3 of 9 in Historic Sites in Rabat
Hassan Tower, a partially completed minaret of an unfinished mosque, now represents part of a World Heritage Site. Started in 1195, the minaret was half its intended height when its founder Sultan Yaqub al-Mansur died just before the turn of the century. The tower was left as it was, with a height of 44 m (140 ft), with work on the rest of the mosque also halted. Constructed from red sandstone, the structure has a striking appearance, its Moorish design reminiscent of towers and churches scattered across Spain. • Hassan comes out magnificent in pictures. It is one of the very few beautiful places to which the Entrance is free in Rabat. It's a pity it closes early in the evening. Try to be there before 18h00.
  • The significance of this site is that it displays the aspirations of the Arabic empires of the Middle Ages - lets build the biggest minaret in the world! But; they didn’t quite get there. The most beautiful fountain in Morocco is at this site and the other benefit of going here is that it’s right next door to the mausoleum. Beautiful, State horses guard the entrance into the square. The photos are deceiving because they tower itself is not overly tall.
