A significant slice of New Zealand's history, Waitangi Treaty Grounds commemorate the site where local Maori chiefs signed a historic treaty with the representatives of the British crown. Concluded in February 1840, the treaty recognized Maori ownership of their lands and granted them rights of British subjects. The agreement also established a British governor to administer the country. The grounds include a buidling erected in 1832 for one of the area's British residents, which today serves as a museum housing various historical exhibits and a copy of the original treaty. Get the most out of your visit by joining a guided tour, or attend a cultural performance of Maori songs and dances. A visit to Waitangi Treaty Grounds represents just the start of the adventure when you use our Paihia online attractions planner to plot your vacation.

  • Well worth the visit, espcially the museums and treaty house, allow plenty of time as there is much to see.  more »
  • Everyone should visit at least once. Guide very informative. Grounds beautiful, slightly breezy during our visit otherwise would’ve spent longer enjoying the grounds.  more »

  • We had little idea of what to expect but were blown away by this beautiful cultural experience. Our guide during the tour was excellent, the performance amazing & to be able to get photos with the performers & have them answer questions was most informative. We returned the following day just to pick up what we missed the day prior. A very important part of NZ history that must continue to be funded for all the world to experience when visiting the Bay of Islands.
  • Expensive ($50 each) to access, but for that you get an informative guided tour, and if the times line up, a live Maori show. The tour was pleasant, and one gets to walk along boardwalks and covered walkways. Fabulous views of the bay from the top. The newly opened veterans museum is worth checking out too. Nice gift shop.
