Castle of Good Hope, Cape Town Central

3.2
Listed as a provincial heritage site, Castle of Good Hope represents a well-preserved 17th-century star fort initially used by the Dutch East India Company. Built between 1666 and 1679, the timber and clay pentagonal castle remains South Africa's oldest existing colonial structure. Once you reach the compound, which now houses the capital's mechanized infantry unit, you can explore the military museum and other ceremonial and exhibit facilities. You can also stop by one of two restaurants inside the castle to eat and relax. The site offers limited access for the elderly and disabled, but an electronic tour allows guests to visit certain points of interest without the use of stairs. Using our world travel planner, Cape Town attractions like Castle of Good Hope can form part of a personalized travel itinerary.

  • Well maintained fortress from the VOC time. Although one speaks of a "castle". Has undergone a major renovation for a long time, and is now in full glory to visit. Free tour with a guide that gives the background. Built by the Dutch, later taken over by the English. On weekdays there is also a "key ceremony" (key ceremony) at 10:00 pm. Short ceremony by a small group of volunteers is old uniforms. Note, this starts around 09:45 hours. Proposes little, but is quite a nice piece of ceremony. Followed by a performance/explanation of the shooting of a 17th century cannon. Tip: Whoever is the first to donate R100 is allowed to shoot the cannon! The shooter gives a faithful explanation about the firing of the cannon and does this with passion. Indicates at the end of the presentation that they are completely dependent on donations. At the time we were there there was no key Cermenonie or cannon demonstration because of an event. At the checkout we found that we were allowed to come back for free the next day to see the ceremony. Saves R150, but is just sweet. Fort is now completely enclosed by the city, formerly it was by the sea. Highly recommended to see.

  • The oldest stone building of the city, built of Ballasts from the Netherlands in 13 years built. You can walk to it from the hotels in the city centre. Imposing 5 angular building which is now pushed away from the coast. Go to the dining room where the elite ate and eat for 350 years. After 1600 close but can be rented out. I was there for Congress and ASSA SAGES had organized a dinner there. Great... During the day I've been there before, now looks well maintained with lots of information about distant and recent past. Really go along, that this is built with Dutch bricks......!?

  • Always enjoy this place. We got to see them light a canon and fire it. It was amazing. The history and artefacts are awesome. Best to go early as it's good to spend lots of time there to enjoy it. Views are amazing. There are also plenty of venues for hire. Conference, party wedding, etc. They allow most events.
  • Definitely way more exciting and fun than I had expected. The guides are very knowledgeable and present the info in a way that even a non-history-loving person would enjoy. Definitely wouldn't miss this while in Capetown.
