Bird Island Nature Reserve, Lamberts Bay

Explore one of only six sites in the world where Cape gannets breed, and the only one easily accessible to the public, at Bird Island Nature Reserve. The reserve once served as a source of guano, which was collected for fertilizer; nowadays, it provides a home for Cape gannets and crowned cormorants, as well as other types of birds. Keep your eye out for Cape fur seals sunbathing on the island's rocks, and visit the museum, which shows skeletons of whales and dolphins. Rough weather might prohibit entrance to the reserve.
