The Echo Caves in Limpopo, South Africa, are set in Precambrian dolomite rock, which was first laid down about 3800 million years ago, when Africa was still part of Gondwana. The caves are considered some of the oldest in the world. The Echo Caves are about 92km north of the similar Sudwala Caves.

There are a number of speleothem structures in the cave; two of these are hollow stalactites which when hammered create echoes audible throughout and even outside the caves, thus the name of the caves. The caves are over 40km long; regular tours are available for about 2km of the tunnels and chambers.
The caves were used for shelter in recent centuries by the Pedi people; they slept in what is now called the Samson chamber (due to the limestone columns which appear to hold the low roof of the cave up).

    Went there on Sunday 7 Feb 2021 around 2pm. My partner had had a knee replacement recently but no one warned us that we would literally be crawling at places, squeezing through rocks at others. No...  more »

    Learning how the Bapedi people defeated the Swazi. The most exciting thing to learn was how the people stayed in the caves though not literate but were able to take decisions that made their stay in.....  more »

    Very nice experience inside the caves. There is a fee of R60 per person for a 45 minute guided tour inside the caves. You get to learn a bit about the history of the caves. Sandals can be worn but I would advise wearing closed shoes as the floor is wet in some places.

    Loved this place. Our guide was knowledgeable and fascinating. The Tea room quaint and went out of their way to make us feel welcome. All in all well worth the visit. Definitely recommended. Worth noting we started in the undeveloped section which was far more interesting than the shorter developed "tourist" section.
