Marakele National Park, Waterberg

#2 of 6 in Nature in Limpopo Province
Visit the vulture colony, spot leopards, and admire the spiraling horns of the kudu at Marakele National Park, a 670 sq km (260 sq mi) reserve. Located in a transitional area between the dry west and the moister, more fertile east of the country, the national park provides sanctuary for a great diversity of South African wildlife across its fast-changing, dramatic landscape of rivers, gorges, bluffs, forests, and grasslands. With the reintroduction of buffalo in 2013, the park boasts the Big Five game animals for which the country has become a popular safari destination. Marakele National Park is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our online itinerary creator, Waterberg Edition.

  • On the way to Botswana we camped in Marakele National Park at the Bontle Rest Camp. What a wonderful place to make a first safari. The campsite was super. We were surrounded by ostriches that regularly came to inspect. From your seat a nice view over a meadow where the zebras, kudus and warts piggies came over. Spacious rooms with good facilities. In the first part of the park there are no predators but it is only a short ride to that part of the park where all the animals are found. We saw 8 rhinos of which 4 are very close. They do everything to protect the rhinos in this park as well as possible. From the air, along the gates and at the gate is well controlled.

  • National Park with the big 5. Unfenced camping site, tent style chalets and a tented camp lodge available for accommodation. Game drive in the morning and evening. Game walks usually available but may be seasonal - phone reception beforehand to confirm. You can do a self drive in a normal Sedan. Lovely scenery.
  • Are short of visitors and worthy of a visit. Bush walks available (with qualified trail guides) and launch a new off-road (4×4) track imminent! Malaria free Big Five Bush experience in picturesque surroundings.
