Grossmunster, Zurich

4.3
For unbeatable views over the city's Old Town, head to the top of Grossmunster, a Romanesque church allegedly founded by King Charles I, better known to history as Charlemagne. Huldrych Zwingli, one of the leaders of the 16th-century Reformation, used the cathedral for his preachings against the Catholic Church, setting in motion events that eventually severed Switzerland's links to the papacy. Today, the riverside building serves as one of Zurich's principal Protestant churches, its two imposing towers arguably the city's most recognizable landmarks. Be sure to note the stained-glass windows by artist Augusto Giacometti and a 15th-century statue of Charlemagne in the church crypt. Grossmunster is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our custom trip planner, Zurich Edition.

  • This church was the center of the Swiss reformation. It is free to visit (except the tower). It was an eye opening to experience the modern artwork made by Polke between 2006 and 2009.  more »

  • Very cool building and architecture. Paid a few francs and went up to the top for a nice view of the city which was worth it. Watch out for the super narrow spiral staircase going up and down.
  • Beautiful old church, but you are not allowed to take any pictures inside the building. Take some time to check out the stained glass windows. And for 10 Euro you can walk in the spiral.
