Founded by the Spanish in 1521, San Juan is the oldest city under U.S.
Paseo de la Princesa and Sitio Histórico de San Juan are good opportunities to explore the local culture. Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Santa Maria Magdalena de Pazzis Cemetery and Luquillo Beach. Change things up with a short trip to El Yunque Rain Forest in El Yunque National Forest (about 1h 10 min away). For sixty years until 2003, most of the Isla de Vieques was closed off to the public, with the US Navy using the island's beaches and surrounding waters for drills and testing of new military machinery, such as bombs.

Little Island

With much of Culebra a nature refuge, the tropical island has been protected from overdevelopment, chain hotels, and the cruise set.
Start off your visit on the 15th (Fri): visit a coastal fixture at Culebrita Lighthouse and then enjoy the sand and surf at Flamenco Beach. On the 16th (Sat), you'll have a packed day of sightseeing: kick back and relax at Playa Punta Soldado Beach, stroll through Zoni Beach, and then enjoy the sand and surf at Brava Beach.

Ponce is both a city and a municipality in the southern part of Puerto Rico. Start off your visit on the 17th (Sun): step off the mainland to explore Isla de Caja de Muertos and then take in the waterfront at La Guancha.
