Founded by the Spanish in 1521, San Juan is the oldest city under U.S. jurisdiction and one of the oldest in the Americas.
Take a break from the city and head to El Yunque Rain Forest and Playa Luquillo. Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Paseo de la Princesa and Santa Maria Magdalena de Pazzis Cemetery. The adventure continues: appreciate the extensive heritage of Old San Juan and steep yourself in history at Catedral Basilica Menor de San Juan Bautista.

For sixty years until 2003, most of the Isla de Vieques was closed off to the public, with the US Navy using the island's beaches and surrounding waters for drills and testing of new military machinery, such as bombs.

Little Island

With much of Culebra a nature refuge, the tropical island has been protected from overdevelopment, chain hotels, and the cruise set.
Start off your visit on the 15th (Fri): visit a coastal fixture at Culebrita Lighthouse and then enjoy the sand and surf at Flamenco Beach. On the 16th (Sat), you'll have a packed day of sightseeing: kick back and relax at Playa Punta Soldado Beach, stroll through Playa Zoni, and then enjoy the sand and surf at Brava Beach.

Getting from Isla de Vieques to Culebra by flight takes about 3.5 hours. Other options: ride a ferry. In September in Culebra, expect temperatures between 89°F during the day and 79°F at night. Finish your sightseeing early on the 17th (Sun) so you can travel to Ponce.

Ponce is both a city and a municipality in the southern part of Puerto Rico. Start off your visit on the 17th (Sun): step off the mainland to explore Isla de Caja de Muertos and then take in the waterfront at La Guancha de Ponce.
