The capital of French Polynesia, Pape'ete amounts to little more than a medium-sized town by Western standards, but it is still a thriving hub of culture and commerce.
Do some cultural sightseeing at James Norman Hall Home and Museum of Tahiti and the Islands. Escape the urban bustle at Tahiti Lagoon Paradise and Aratai Safari. Step out of Papeete to go to Taravao and see The Water Gardens of Vaipahi, which is approximately 56 minutes away. There's more to do: get outside with Vallee de la Papenoo and take in the dramatic scenery at Faarumai Waterfalls.

To see photos, more things to do, ratings, and other tourist information, go to the Papeete trip itinerary site.

New York City, USA to Papeete is an approximately 19-hour flight. The time zone difference moving from Eastern Standard Time (EST) to Tahiti Time (TAHT) is minus 5 hours. Traveling from New York City in June, expect a bit warmer with lows of 73°F in Papeete. Finish your sightseeing early on the 18th (Sat) so you can ride a ferry to Maharepa.

French Polynesia travel guide

Scuba & Snorkeling · Gift & Specialty Shops · Waterskiing & Jetskiing
Spanning an area of the South Pacific as large as Western Europe, French Polynesia includes 118 islands and atolls scattered across the blue ocean. White sand beaches (and pink and black) skirt rugged island peaks, while magnificent coral reefs form tranquil lagoons, dyed a startling blue and teeming with fish, eels, dolphins, rays, turtles, and sharks. The names Tahiti and Bora Bora conjure up images of private thatched bungalows built out over a lagoon, and couples silhouetted against the sunset. That said, a wide range of family-run hotels and bed and breakfasts offer less extravagant (and surprisingly affordable) experiences that take in more of the laid-back local culture.
