Founded when gold was discovered in the area in the late 19th century, Johannesburg quickly grew into a bustling metropolis, South Africa's largest city and the region's economic hub.

Take a break from the city and head to Lion and Safari Park and Alberts Farm. Get some historical perspective at Constitution Hill Human Rights Precinct and Mandela House. You'll find plenty of places to visit near Johannesburg: Pretoria (Union Buildings & Woodlands Boulevard), Balloon Rides (in Muldersdrift) and Irene Village Mall (in Centurion). Spend the 2nd (Sat) spotting exotic species with a safari tour.
