A Soviet-like grid of opulent marble edifices in the center of the desert, Ashgabat paints an unusual picture.
Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Turkmen Museum of Fine Arts and Geokdepe. Give yourself a bit of retail therapy at Russian Bazaar and Tolkuchka-Basar. There's still lots to do: take an unorthodox tour of Kow Ata Underground Lake, contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Ertugrul Gazi Mosque, see the interesting displays at Turkmen Carpet Museum, and pause for some serene contemplation at Hezreti Osman Mosque.
