Tsuruoka, famous for its scenic surroundings, attracts tourists due to its proximity to the Dewa Sanzan, sacred mountains revered by the Shugendo religion.
On the 24th (Fri), contemplate the long history of Mt.Haguro- Dewasanzan Sanjin Gosaiden, contemplate the long history of Mt. Haguro, and then contemplate the long history of Hagurosan Five-Story Pagoda. Get ready for a full day of sightseeing on the 25th (Sat): see the interesting displays at Somaro, contemplate the long history of Sankyo Soko Storehouse, and then get up close and personal with brilliant marine life at Tsuruoka City Kamo Aquarium.

Tokyo to Tsuruoka is an approximately 2.5-hour flight. You can also take a train; or drive. When traveling from Tokyo in December, plan for little chillier days and about the same nights in Tsuruoka: temperatures range from 7°C by day to 1°C at night. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 25th (Sat) early enough to drive to Akita.

Akita

The coastal city of Akita has gained a wider reputation for its Kanto Matsuri, or "pole lantern festival," where skilled performers balance long bamboo poles on their foreheads with glowing paper lanterns attached to the end.
Kick off your visit on the 26th (Sun): take in nature's colorful creations at Senshu Park, step into the grandiose world of Kubota Castle, and then admire the masterpieces at Akita Museum Of Art.
