The northernmost city in the country, Wakkanai experiences constant exposure to the elements, with windy and snow-covered winters perhaps its main claim to fame on a national level.
Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Soya Misaki and Old Naval Watchtower. Go for a jaunt from Wakkanai to Toyotomi-cho to see Toyotomi Onsen Fureai Center about 50 minutes away.
