First Akmola, then Tselinograd, and now Astana: the city's latest name means "capital," something Astana became in 1998.
Visiting Bauyrzhan Momyshuly Park and Arai will get you outdoors. Do your shopping at Khan Shatyr and Astana Allee. Step out of Nur-Sultan with an excursion to Alzhir, Memorial Museum of Victims of Political Repressions and Totalitarianism in Malinovka--about 50 minutes away. The adventure continues: brush up on your military savvy at National Museum of Kazakhstan, take in panoramic vistas at Bayterek Tower, pause for some serene contemplation at Nur-Astana Mosque, and identify plant and animal life at Korgalzhyn State Nature Reserve.

If you are flying in from United Arab Emirates, the closest major airport is Astana International Airport. August in Nur-Sultan sees daily highs of 30°C and lows of 15°C at night. Cap off your sightseeing on the 9th (Fri) early enough to travel back home.
