City of Dreams

The cultural, economic, and political center of the country, Vienna has developed from its early Celtic and Roman roots into a medieval and Baroque city, with an old town that was designated a World Heritage Site in 2001.
Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Rathausplatz and Maria Theresia Denkmal. Next up on the itinerary: explore the historical opulence of Schonbrunn Palace, pause for some serene contemplation at St. Stephen's Cathedral, learn about all things military at Heeresgeschichtliches Museum, and contemplate the long history of Kaisergruft.

To see more things to do, maps, reviews, and other tourist information, you can read our Vienna road trip planning tool.

Pearl of the Danube

You might consider the city of Budapest, divided by the Danube River into two distinctive cities--Buda and Pest--to be essentially one large World Heritage Site.
You'll explore the less-touristy side of things at Wine Tours & Tastings and Food Tours. There's much more to do: ponder the world of politics at Hungarian Parliament Building, head off the coast to Margaret Island, pause for some photo ops at Statue of St Stephen, and steep yourself in history at Fisherman's Bastion.
