Dougga, Beja Governorate

4.8
Ramble through the deserted, cobblestoned streets of Dougga, the best-preserved Roman town in North Africa and a World Heritage Site. Perched on a rocky hilltop above fertile plains, this archeological site features not only an ancient Roman capitol with a large theater, but also the remains of earlier structures, including a Punic-Libyan mausoleum. The small town prospered under Roman and Byzantine rules, during which its wealthy residents built 20 temples, misleading scholars to believe that this was a major religious site. Notice the intricate floor mosaics and look for the remains of Roman baths, a circus, and two triumphal arches. Put Dougga into our Beja Governorate trip maker app and find out what's close by, where to stay, and where to head next.

  • The main problem of most such places is that they have been preserved heterogeneously and are perceived simply as an open-air museum with a set of individual exhibits. Duggu has passed a similar fate, the local ruins make a holistic impression of the ancient settlement. The most picturesque Dugga looks in spring. Around the ruins bloom flower fields and at the foot of the hill bloom fruit trees, the air is filled with honey fragrance. When visiting the ruins, stock up on water and take care of protection from the sun, the shadow there is quite difficult to find. You can negotiate with the bus driver at the nearest town. He'll take you there, and when you're done, the guard will call him and the driver will come back for you.
