Lubart's Castle, Lutsk

4.5
Lutsk High Castle, also known as Lubart's Castle, began its life in the mid-14th century as the fortified seat of Gediminas' son Liubartas (Lubart), the last ruler of united Galicia-Volhynia. It is the most prominent landmark of Lutsk, Ukraine and as such appears on the 200 hryvnia bill. Another city castle, built by the Czartoryski family starting from the 14th century, is now a ruin.
The Kievan town of Luchesk had a wooden wall as early as 1075, when Boleslaw the Brave laid siege to it for six months. Yury Dolgoruky failed to take Lutsk after a six-weeks siege in 1149. In 1255, the walls of Lutsk were stormed by Jochi's grandson Kuremsa.
The current castle, towering over the Styr River, was built mostly in the 1340s, although some parts of the earlier walls were used. It repelled sieges by numerous potentates, including Casimir the Great (1349), Jogaila (1431), and Sigismund Kęstutaitis (1436). It was there that the Lutsk Conference of 1429 took place, attended by Emperor Sigismund, Vasily II of Moscow, Jogaila, Vytautas the Great, and the voivode of Wallachia.

  • As part of the tour of Lutsk visited this site. I liked it, the weather was favorable. Entrance 30 g. Lucky to hear a trumpeter play from the castle tower.

  • Reading the history of this castle, with information about the reunion of the Monarchs, my imagination worked and I was expecting a little more. In addition to the walls and heavily sfatygated wooden stairs leading to them (I admit that I did not feel at them probably) little was to see. The Bells Museum described is literally 3 pieces. At least I was able to find:(. There is no problem with a clean toilet;] This castle is located on the banknote 200 UAH and I wanted to take a picture with a bankmemo and a castle in the background, but the malicious ATMs seemed hundreds (3 times I tried). Entrance to the castle is the amount of 60 UAH = 9 PLN = 2 €

  • Not much to see but still cool. This is the first castle I've ever seen so I'm sure there is better. I went to the very top of the tower. The tour guide did a great job. If you do not speak English, there isn't much help for you just a heads up!
  • It is the place you should visit for sure! The condition of the castle is very good, you can climb to the top of the wall and visit a few museums located in the castle. The entrance fee is very low, recommend to take an excursion.
