Nikolaev Zoo, Mykolayiv

4.1
Nestled in a pristine green area, provides for about 2,800 animals representing 377 species, some of which are endangered. Dating back to 1901, the zoo started off as the private aquarium collection of the mayor. Over time, it grew into an institution with one of the richest varieties of animals in the country. In 2003, the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums added it to their list, making it the first one in Ukraine to be internationally certified. Walk through the grounds and encounter wild and domestic animals of all kinds and sizes: you'll see tigers at play, observe hippopotamuses, and watch the monkeys. • Pleased. A lot has been done and continue to be modernized. The location of the cells is correct, there are a lot of places and you need to walk too much, but my son likes it here. We come once every six months. We try to get not on holidays and not on weekends - we want to see animals, not people. Thought out the territory and playgrounds, if the kids get tired to walk and want to ride a slide or just ride a swing. Photos can be made a lot, there is still a beautiful selection of trees, shrubs, flowerbeds. Shops help to catch their breath for those who are not used to walking for a long time. There is a cafeteria where you can buy fresh pastries for your child and enjoy your own coffee.

  • Pleasant experience for my boys. They enjoyed seeing all the animals. I know this is one of the better zoos in Ukraine... natural habitats, etc., and we chose a nice day to visit -- not hot! There is plenty of shade from trees throughout the park. However, you just can't compare to U.S. zoos. The smell is pretty bad and I think more could be done about that. Overall, though, it is a great activity idea in Mykolaiv.
  • The oldest and the most full zoo since the old Soviet Union collapse. Founded by Leontovych, Ukrainian composer, whose Christmas carol "Carol of the Bells" is the world's jewel. Pleasant and nice place to go with kids and family.
