Potemkin Stairs, Odessa

3.9
Odessa's best-known city landmark and symbol, Potemkin Stairs also served as the site for a famous early film scene. The 1925 film "Battleship Potemkin" used the steps as the stage for a fictionalized massacre of civilians by Tsarist forces and a naval mutiny on a ship of the same name. You can walk the steps yourself along the seaward-facing entrance to town and see the optical illusion that makes it appear as a continuous staircase or a continuous landing from the bottom and top, respectively. Bring your camera; from the top of the stairs you can get a sweeping view over the bay and harbor. • The stairs are not to be missed during a visit to Odessa. The perspective from above as well as from below is impressive and it offers an impressive view of the harbour and the sea. If you are not on foot, there is also the possibility to use a train next to the stairs.

  • It can be seen if you know the film and date. The historic buildings around it increase the importance of parks and sculptures. Especially considering the scene of the massacre on the stairs in the film, it is hard not to be moved.

  • The Potemkin Stairs are legendary, but they seem to have lost themselves somewhere along the way. Instead of being an entrance to the city there's just a busy fenced-off road at the bottom, and beyond that there's an eyesore of a construction that ends at the Odessa Hotel. Overrated is the best word I can think of to the describe the stairs in their current environment.
  • Swamped with tourists. Cars at the bottom of the stairs and tourists at the top. It is what it is. Now that I've seen once I'm pretty shure I will never come back. There are countless more nice places all over Odessa.
