Fort Donelson National Battlefield preserves Fort Donelson and Fort Heiman, two sites of the American Civil War Forts Henry and Donelson Campaign, in which Union Army Brigadier General Ulysses S. Grant and Flag Officer Andrew Hull Foote captured three Confederate forts and opened two rivers, the Tennessee River and the Cumberland River, to control by the Union Navy. The commanders received national recognition for their victories in February 1862, as they were the first major Union successes of the war. The capture of Fort Donelson and its garrison by the Union led to the capture of Tennessee's capital and industrial center, Nashville, which remained in Union hands from February 25, 1862 until the end of the war, and gave the Union effective control over much of Tennessee. This struck a major blow to the Confederacy early in the war.Plan to see Fort Donelson National Battlefield and other attractions that appeal to you using our Dover tour builder app.
The main portion of the park, in Dover, Tennessee, commemorates the Battle of Fort Donelson (36°29′41″N 87°51′22″W). Fort Heiman, in nearby Calloway County, Kentucky, was a Confederate battery in the Battle of Fort Henry.
Fort Donelson National Battlefield Reviews
I didn’t see anything special about this place. Visitors center was closed at the time we were there. The county it is located in is trashy and junky. more »
Wonderful National Battlefield. We loved the views and the Confederate monument is one of my favorite ones I’ve seen. The ranger, Blake, at the visitors center was so helpful, informed and friendly... more »
Although the visitor center was closed for renovation when we visited, the battlefield was excellent. There are several cannon batteries overlooking the river, some nice monuments, and numerous earthworks. This is one of my favorite battles fields I've visited.
Awesome place to visit some of America's Civil War history. The fact that they made it a driving tour with the guided options through your phone is really cool. We were able to cruise around in the comfort of our car and get out where we wanted. Everything is very well maintained and easy to follow. Being able to get out and check the Cumberland River was awesome. Please be sure to go to the visitors center first before you start the tour. I think it may be the only way to get the phone number, map and see some pre-tour video. Highly recommend this!
