Haleakala Crater, Haleakala National Park

#1 of 32 in Nature in Maui
Known primarily for its dramatic sunrises and sunsets, Haleakala Crater is the world's largest dormant volcano, forming more than 75 percent of the island of Maui. Over a million years old, the volcano is locally known as the "House of the Sun," its tallest peak rising up to 3,055 m (10,023 ft) above sea level. You can reach the summit, gaze into the crater, or walk across its floor by hiking up a series of rugged trails. Though there's little chance of an eruption, you must be extremely careful on the steep and often treacherous paths. Check the weather before you go and dress appropriately for cold temperatures at the summit. • I am a huge fan of volcanoes and this crater is so cool - there are multiple cinder cones with beautiful colours. On a clear day you can see all across it from the peak, and can see the clouds creep u...  more »
  • It's worth thanking the time to spend booking a reservation and to arrive at the entrance at 3:00am to experience sunrise at Haleakala. The National Park staff do a great job handling the crowd and an...  more »
  • What a beautiful destination in Maui! The drive is nice and windy but the views are absolutely gorgeous. It may seem cloudy depending on the day but once you get above the clouds its clear and you can see in every direction. I believe the final destination was 10,023 feet and I was a bit winded just walking around but all good. We got lucky on a nice day so I recommend taking a sweater. There is a stop about exit 117 with a 300 yard hike that gives you some great views. I started in Ka'anappali and it was about a 90 minute drive if that gives you any perspective. If you are trying to go for the sunrise I saw a sign that said you have to have a reservation so sort that out. If you are driving in they accepted credit cards and it was $25. Really some beautiful views though. I'd make the trek if I was in Maui just to check it out! At the top there isn't much but there are some smaller restaurants before you get to the top I've heard are good.
  • It is beautiful and overwhelming in its scope, and the land geese walking around are surreal. Hope to make it here again someday.
