Hike, ride, bike, swim, camp, and more among the rugged cliffs, coastal plains, beaches, and hills of Montana de Oro State Park. Named the "Mountain of Gold" in Spanish for its golden wildflowers that appear in the springtime, the 3,237 hectare (8,000 acre) park features a large network of biking, foot, and equestrian trails ranging in difficulty and length. Head to the highest point, Valencia Peak, at 411 m (1,347 ft), or walk down to Spooner's Cove, the park's most popular beach. Try tide pooling in the coves to see some of the local marine life, and keep an eye out for otters, seabirds, and crabs. If you plan to swim here, beware of the strong tide. This review is for the Sand Spit area of Montana de Oro State Park. Whoa. I hadn't ever ventured down the little road. Loved the remoteness, tons of birds and lack of people. The pelicans are huge and hang out along the water's edge, with literally hundreds of other birds of all makes and models. Not a good beach for rock hounding or shells, but there are a few sections here and there, to sort through. You won't miss the lack of goodies to pick-up on the beach, the birds are freaking amazing. This is not a pet friendly spot. I will be back with binoculars and a birding card, so I can really check out the scene. Plan to spend 1-2 hours walking along the beach. You could bring a sand chair and stay longer. Very peaceful place to kick back and take it all in.

Beautiful park, ranch house, beach and campground. Campground is extremely busy and FULL. Camp host is awesome! Sites are MUCH shorter than advertised on the state website. Made for small trailers and tent camping. No space for an extra vehicle. Would go again, if the spaces were longer or if we ever downsize our trailer. Morro Bay State park is more suitable for a 28 ft trailer.
