Point Pinos Lighthouse was lit on February 1, 1855, to guide ships on the Pacific coast of California. It is the oldest continuously operating lighthouse on the West Coast of the United States and even the lens is original. Alcatraz Island Lighthouse preceded Point Pinos by eight months, but was replaced in 1909 by the expanding military prison. The Point Pinos Lighthouse is still an active United States Coast Guard aid to navigation. On-site museum exhibits and other lighthouse related functions are operated by the city of Pacific Grove, Monterey County, California. The lighthouse is surrounded by the Pacific Grove Municipal Golf Links. With our world travel planner, Pacific Grove attractions like Point Pinos Lighthouse can be center stage of your vacation plans, and you can find out about other attractions like it, unlike it, near it, and miles away.

We went to Pacific Grove and as part of our visit took some photos of the historic Point Pinos Lighthouse. The iighthouse first started guiding mariners in 1855. It is still active today. more »

This lighthouse is worth a stop and the $5 admission. Although serving as a fully automated beacon for more than fifty years, the internal space has been recreated similar to its Victorian, WWI, and WWII time period deco. The volunteer docents are extremely gracious and are eager to share their detailed knowledge of its history. Mostly self-guided, a detailed tour will take about forty five minutes. I recommend visiting this little lighthouse near Monterey, CA.

Great history. The docents have many great stories and love to share them. The history of lighthouse keepers was fascinating. Several were women, which is fantastic. Duck when you go up to see the Fresnel lens...it's tight quarters!
